Japan Supports Education and Agriculture in Northern Region

The Embassy of Japan is to hand over two projects in Northern Uganda of 228,600 USD: one for construction of 3 boys dormitory blocks and procurement of beds for Alere Senior Secondary School in Adjumani (117,203) today, and the other for support of farmer groups in Lango sub region (111,397) tomorrow 21 February 2013.

Counselor Junji Yamazaki, the Deputy Head of Mission of Japan to Uganda will officiate the commissioning of these projects.

Alere Senior Secondary School is a government aided school providing full board education for more than 900 students. The boys’ dormitory facility, however, could only accommodate some 80 boys. The new dormitory blocks constructed, together with 97 double decker beds procured by the project will enable the school to accommodate all the boys and thus reducing overcrowding and preventing infectious diseases, fire and any other accidents which may occur due to overcrowding.

In Lango, returnee farmers belonging to 65 farmer groups have been supported with oxen, ox ploughs, food processing equipment, improved seeds, and 2 rice huller machines. Through this project, living conditions of at least 1,800 households will be improved and stable food supply restored to the region through modern agricultural techniques.

The donation by Japan is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community development projects to uplift the life of grassroots people. So far, a total of 166 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.

Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with African countries through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidating peace and good governance in Africa.
